What is PAT and how is it done?

PAT or portable appliance testing simply refers to an electrical device that is used to test the electrical safety of various appliances. It is done in three steps.

    • The first step is to ensure that there is earth continuity. This is done by checking if the appliance is correctly and securely earthed inside the equipment. This is a very important step because if your appliance is not correctly earthed, you may get an electrical shock if it goes live. On the other hand, if your appliance is correctly earthed and an RCD is being used then it ensures complete safety.
    • The second step is to check the insulation of the appliances. An electrical fault may occur within the equipment which may not have been visible to the naked eye. Most of the appliances used in the salon require heating up so any insulation defects may cause a short. The various electrical appliances in a salon range from hair dryers to hair straighteners and even sterilizers. All of them require heating up so it’s important that insulation is carefully taken into account.
    • The third and the last step measures the electrical load and consumption of an appliance. An un-serviced or old appliance takes up less current than it was intended to. Any difference in the electrical load and consumption can cause a spark and even fire.

Importance of PAT and why you should get it done?

As mentioned earlier on, PAT or portable appliance testing is basically used to test the safety of your electrical appliances. PAT should be performed on a regular basis and especially if you have even a hint of doubt about any of your machines. Remember it is better to be safe than sorry. A few benefits of PAT are given below.

    • PAT can reduce the risk of fire and electrocution by detecting any faults which may not be visible to the naked eye.
    • These tests are not at all costly and if you compare it to what you might lose in case there’s a fire or any unwanted accident involving a client, you’ll be queuing up to get your appliances tested.
    • Getting your appliances tested via PAT is one of the best ways to fulfill a statutory requirement that ensures safety for all customers and clients and holds the employers and landlords responsible in case of any mishap.
    • It’s not a time-consuming process at all and in fact, it can easily and quickly identify the underlying problem in your appliance so that you can get it replaced or serviced.
