What Is Network Analyst and Their Role in the Market

  • One of the greatest advances in the history of mankind was, without a doubt, the emergence of communication as a way to establish relationships between individuals of the same group.

    Abstract language, being a form of corporal and figurative expression, allowed a qualitative leap in the levels of evolution as a species. Not only because it helped to strengthen ties within that primordial society, but also because it made it possible to understand the importance of ideas and collective organization as the only means of survival in the world.

    Although in its origins, these primitive forms of communication, were directly associated with the satisfaction of basic needs. As the centuries passed, individuals began to structure a complex and varied network of links. These ranged from commercial relationships to political, military or even religious alliances.

    These relationships allowed the development of highly sophisticated societies, which took advantage of the advantages offered by the networks. They managed to expand languages, products and ways of life beyond imagination.

    Nowadays, modern society is the best example of the success of this type of organization. Networks are a fundamental part of life and activities carried out by man over any point on the planet. The information society is completely immersed in a medium that lives to allow and accommodate a growing number of relationships.

    Currently, it is increasingly common for the management of transport networks or utilities (water, gas, electricity) to require the use of Geographical Information Systems Tools.

    But it is the specific modules of network analysis such as ArcGIS Network that allow a correct and efficient management of networks.

    The objective of the course is to train students in the ArcGIS Network Analyst extension in order to generate and model transport networks and geometric networks. The main functionalities and the mechanisms to create and modify networks will be studied. The methodology and the workflow for the creation of both a transport network and a geometric network through real examples are analyzed.

    With the tools learned during the course the student can use the GIS for network analysis applications in different studies related to the environment: Urban mobility, management and optimization of waste collection, maintenance of distribution networks, etc.
